Jaguar Land Rover Tests Range Rover EV in Arctic Chills and Desert Heat

globalautonews Views

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Korea announced that it is conducting driving tests of the prototype of the Range Rover Electric in the world’s harshest locations. Range Rover Electric, the brand’s first pure electric vehicle, is attracting attention as a model that will lead the way in powerful electric driving performance and a sophisticated and luxurious driving experience. The Range Rover Electric prototype is currently testing the performance of the electric powertrain in extreme climate environments, from the Arctic Circle, where temperatures drop to -40℃, to the heat wave in the Middle East desert, where temperatures soar to 50℃.

The first stage of testing focused on battery capacity and electric drive unit (EDU) performance in an ultra-low temperature environment of -40℃. Batteries and EDUs are key components that directly affect the performance of electric vehicles, along with transmissions, electric motors, and electric power transmission devices. JLR assembles and produces both batteries and EDUs in-house for the first time in the brand’s history.

This test, conducted on an ice lake in Sweden, proved the performance of its new fully electric driving system developed in-house. In addition, it surpassed the performance of Range Rover, which had already built a high reputation in rough driving environments. Specifically, it was confirmed that it can maintain its unrivaled all-terrain, all-weather driving ability across all terrains, weather situations, and road surface conditions.

The new traction control system first applied to a Range Rover, delivers excellent performance even on frozen, icy roads or roads with low grip. Unlike traditional traction control setups based primarily on ABS units, Range Rover Electric’s new traction control system manages each electric drive control unit directly in the event of wheel slip. Through this, the torque response time of each wheel is significantly shortened from about 0.1 seconds to less than 0.001 seconds.

Innovative software developed in-house by JLR reduces the need for ABS intervention by precisely controlling wheel slip through precise EDU speed control. Through this excellent response and sophisticated configuration, Range Rover’s overall driving experience was also significantly improved by maximizing driving power in any road condition. This system coordinates with the stability control and chassis systems to provide a more sophisticated driving experience.

Thomas Mueller, Executive Director of Product Engineering at JLR, stated, “The Range Rover Electric melds the distinct luxury, sophistication, and performance of Range Rover with a virtually silent electric powertrain, ensuring a smooth and tranquil journey.” He continued, “It makes this possible.” Mueller also mentioned, “We meticulously perform all physical tests and develop programs to guarantee perfection. We have structured these programs to optimize the Range Rover Electric’s performance, and we are confident that it will deliver an unmatched level of performance upon its official release.”
