iPhone, Apple’s flagship product, saw a 52% increase in shipments in China last month, bouncing back amidst a wave of discounts from retail partners.
According to data from the China Information and Communications Institute, smartphone shipments in China are surging. About 3.5 million units are from foreign brands, with iPhones accounting for most.
Earlier this year, the iPhone experienced a sharp decline, including a double-digit decrease in sales of the latest version, after losing its premium market share to Huawei. However, it quickly rebounded after recording growth in March.
Furthermore, Apple and Chinese resellers have been lowering prices since the beginning of 2024, and these deals are expanding into the sale season, coinciding with the shopping festival on June 18th in China.
On the other hand, a recent survey in China revealed that “more than half of the respondents, compared to the current 33% of premium device users, are willing to spend more than $550 on their next mobile phone.”
Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Steven Tseng and Sean Chen interpreted these results as indicating that Apple, previously trailing Huawei, has regained its favored status among Chinese smartphone consumers. They suggested that the iPhone’s declining market share in China might soon stabilize.
They noted that the shift in consumer preference seems to stem from a trend towards premium products in China, coupled with growing consumer fatigue due to a prolonged wait for Huawei’s high-end models.
