According to a report from the Russian Federal Digital Communications Ministry on Thursday, Google has implemented restrictions on account creation restrictions for users in Russia.
In August, Google announced that it would deactivate AdSense accounts in Russia.
The Ministry noted a significant decrease in SMS messages sent to Russian users, which are essential for account verification processes.
They have advised Russian users of Google services to back up their data, explore alternative two-factor authentication methods, or consider transitioning to domestic platforms.
Google has faced ongoing pressures in Russia, mainly due to its failure to remove content deemed illegal by Moscow and for blocking the YouTube channels of various Russian media outlets and celebrities.
In March 2022, Google stopped providing ads to users in Russia and ceased monetizing content that exploited, dismissed, or condoned Russia’s war in Ukraine.
It also blocked over 1,000 YouTube channels, including those sponsored by Russia, and more than 5.5 million videos.
Recently, users have reported slower speeds on Google’s YouTube video hosting platform in Russia.
Russian lawmakers pointed out that Google’s failure to upgrade its equipment caused the slowdown, but Google and tech experts have disputed this claim.
