Chinese e-commerce platform Temu has secured the top spot as the most downloaded free app on the U.S. App Store, marking a significant achievement in its rapid rise within the American market.
According to a CNBC report on Tuesday, Apple’s 2024 U.S. App Store rankings reveal that Temu has retained its position as the most downloaded free app for the second consecutive year. Meta’s Instagram and Threads followed in second and third place, while TikTok rounded out the top three.
AI chatbot ChatGPT and Google took fourth and fifth spots, respectively, while Temu’s primary competitor, fast-fashion retailer Shein, ranked twelfth.
Since entering the U.S. market in 2022, Temu has aggressively challenged Amazon’s dominance. However, the platform now faces growing scrutiny from U.S. regulators who are concerned about low-cost Chinese shopping sites. The potential for increased tariffs under a future Trump administration compounds this pressure.
President-elect Donald Trump has signaled plans to prioritize restrictions on Chinese imports, which is increasing market uncertainty. This trend extends beyond the U.S., with Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand also imposing anti-dumping tariffs on Chinese goods.
Japan’s Nomura Securities estimates that the U.S.’s total ban on minimum imports from China could reduce China’s annual export growth by 1.3% and lower its GDP growth rate by 0.2%.
