Russia’s new electric SUV, the Kama Atom, has revealed its first image and is gaining attention. The electric vehicle (EV) began developing in 2021 and is undergoing extensive testing. The industry predicts that it could be launched in 2025.

In the case of Kama Atom, the Russian EV startup Kama is developing it and preparing for full-scale commercialization with a huge investment. In particular, it is securing technological prowess through cooperation with Atom Automotive Engineering and Technology, based in Nanjing, China, and support from the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF).

Kama Atom: A Vital Project for Russia’s Auto Revival

The Russian automobile market has shrunk sharply since the war in Ukraine in 2022. Given this situation, Kama’s Atom is considered an important project aimed at promoting the recovery and development of the Russian automobile industry through cooperation between Russia and China.

In the case of the Kama Atom, it has been re-examined with a different look than the image released in May 2023. The latest photos released through the Russian automotive media outlet Kolesa show a larger and more sophisticated design, and curiosity is growing as to whether this change is a design with a mass-produced model in mind or a new vehicle.

Design Influences: A Fusion of Russian and Chinese Styles

The Kama Atom features a silhouette similar to that of the MG 4 in terms of appearance, but it is characterized by being larger, taller, and longer. The LED headlights and light bar are integrated into a design for the front, and the main lights are placed inside the bumper without a grille, creating a clean impression.

The short front and rear overhangs and long wheelbase stand out from the side, while the side windows at the top of the body show off unique proportions. These design elements are similar to the sensual style commonly seen in recent Chinese electric vehicles.

Expanding the Lineup: A New Vision for Russia’s EV Market

As of now, little is known about the detailed specifications of the Kama Atom. Technical information such as battery capacity and electric motor performance are expected to be revealed in a future announcement.

Meanwhile, Kama quietly unveiled its new electric sedan Lightning in August 2023 and is also developing a delivery van version based on the Atom. This diverse model lineup is expected to open new possibilities for the Russian electric vehicle market.
