GM’s Future EVs Might Just Have 4 Motors — What Does That Mean for Performance?

GM is exploring using quad-motor powertrains in electric vehicles to improve performance both on and off the road.

According to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), GM filed a patent on May 17, 2023, and published it on November 21, 2024. The patent covers mechanically connecting two electric motors to drive a single axle. According to GM, the linkage can be operated by locking the two motors via a clutch pack, providing maximum torque in various driving scenarios.

For example, in low-friction off-road conditions or situations where one wheel is in the air, the combined torque of the two motors can be directed to the wheel with the best grip. Conversely, GM explained that on paved roads, it could improve directional stability during straight-line acceleration, contribute to 0-60 mph acceleration performance, and help alleviate excessive steering sensitivity at highway speeds.

According to the patent, the technology could allow for a quad-motor powertrain, with two motors placed on either the front or rear axle of the electric vehicle. Currently, GM uses a tri-motor powertrain with one front motor and two rear motors in the GMC Hummer EV, but the rear motor is operated electronically.

Other manufacturers are also paying attention to the quad-motor powertrain. Rivian has already applied the quad-motor system to its R1S and R1T models, and BMW has been publicly testing its own quad-motor technology since 2022. BMW’s quad-motor system is expected to deliver up to 1,341 horsepower in some applications and is likely to be applied to the electric M3 sports sedan.
