Kia EV9 owners in the United States will soon be able to power their homes using vehicle to home (V2H) functionality. Starting in June, the Wallbox Quasar 2 will be available as the first home bidirectional EV charger compatible with the EV9. Pre-orders are now open for vehicle owners and lessees.

The Quasar 2 charges the EV9’s battery and allows the vehicle to supply power to a home, which ensures that essential lighting stays on during outages. To enable this feature, users must install a separate Power Recovery Unit that connects the charger to the home’s electrical panel.

Kia offers EV9 owners priority access to the Quasar 2, but pre-orders must be placed directly through Wallbox. The product will be available in limited quantities on a first come, first served basis.

Not all homes will be compatible with this system. It requires a minimum electrical service capacity of 200 amps, and permits from utility companies or local authorities may be necessary in some regions.

The Quasar 2 is also compatible with solar panel systems and includes dedicated software for managing energy distribution. This integration allows power generated from solar panels to be allocated between the vehicle battery, home, and power grid. Under optimal conditions, users can charge their EV9s during off-peak hours or with solar energy and potentially sell excess power back to the grid.

With the EV9, Kia aims to expand the role of electric vehicles beyond transportation by offering energy solutions that enhance efficiency and sustainability in everyday life.
