Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is rapidly becoming a key feature in modern vehicles, with a new player entering the scene: DeepSeek. This controversial AI technology has garnered attention in the automotive world, as several automakers, including China’s largest electric vehicle brand, BYD, are collaborating with DeepSeek to integrate its capabilities into their vehicles.

Baojun, a joint venture between General Motors and SAIC Motor, has unveiled its flagship sedan, the Xiangjing, as the first vehicle equipped with DeepSeek’s AI technology. While the technology holds promise, concerns regarding safety and its unverified performance in real-world applications have been raised.

Xiangjing’s Powertrain Options: PHEV and EV

The Baojun Xiangjing will be available in two powertrain configurations: a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and a fully electric vehicle (EV). The PHEV version will come with a 20.5 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, offering a driving range of approximately 101 km (63 miles) based on the CLTC standard. It will be paired with a 141-horsepower turbocharged 1.5L engine, ensuring solid performance for a daily commute.

The EV version of the Xiangjing will feature a larger lithium iron phosphate battery, delivering a maximum output of 249 horsepower and a top speed of 170 km/h (105.6 mph). This configuration makes the electric model a formidable option in terms of power and efficiency.

A Flagship Sedan with Generous Dimensions

The Xiangjing boasts generous dimensions for a semi-large sedan: 5,005 mm (197.0 inches) in length, 1,900 mm (74.8 inches) in width, and 1,505 mm (59.3 inches) in height, with a 2,900 mm (114.2 inches) wheelbase. The sleek curves of the Porsche Taycan inspire its exterior design. The PHEV model features a distinctive lighting design across the headlamps, while the electric variant embraces a minimalistic approach with a cleaner air intake.

While the interior design has not been fully revealed, leaked images suggest a modern, tech-focused cabin. A small instrument panel display and a large infotainment system are central to the layout, emphasizing a clean, minimalist aesthetic. Wireless smartphone charging pads and cup holders are conveniently positioned in the center.

DeepSeek AI Technology: A Double-Edged Sword?

The core of Xiangjing’s innovative technology lies in DeepSeek’s AI capabilities, which are integrated with Baojun’s voice recognition system. While Baojun’s voice recognition will handle basic functions like navigation and climate control, DeepSeek will handle more complex commands and questions, offering logical and complex answers through a separate inference process.

Other brands, including BYD, Geely, Zeekr, Lantu, Dongfeng, and Zhiji, have also announced plans to incorporate DeepSeek into their upcoming vehicles. Even General Motors works with Chinese manufacturers to integrate Chinese-made software into its cars. This has sparked debate over whether these vehicles can truly be considered “global” products or if their integration of Chinese technology compromises their safety and security.
