The movie series Despicable Me, beloved by fans globally, is returning with the confirmation of its 4th season premiere in Korea.

The fourth installment of Despicable Me, a flagship work of top animation studio Illumination, is set to premiere in Korea on July 24. Starting as Illumination’s first feature-length animation in 2010, the Despicable Me series has captivated movie fans worldwide with the unique chemistry between the minions and their master, Gru, revered as the greatest villain in history.

The three Despicable Me films and two spin-off Minions series have collectively earned over $4.6 billion, establishing the franchise as the highest-grossing animated film franchise in history and revealing its unparalleled grandeur. In particular, the previously released Despicable Me recorded over $1.0348 billion in worldwide box office revenue, solidifying its reputation and attracting global attention to the new story of Despicable Me 4, set to return in 2024.

The first trailer for Despicable Me 4, released alongside the announcement of its premiere, captured viewers’ attention with the feature of Gru’s three adorable daughters and a son who looks just like his father. Gru Junior, who switches from being adorable to being a handful once in his father’s arms, hints at the challenging world of parenting that even the world’s strongest villain cannot avoid, sparking interest.

The atmosphere takes a turn as news of Gru’s long-time rival Maxim breaking out of prison reaches and disrupts the formerly blissful Gru family, signaling a major crisis. In his quest to protect his family, Gru sneaks into a secluded castle under the cover of darkness, donning a suspicious masked outfit. At the same time, everyone sleeps, piquing curiosity about his mysterious intentions.

Gru, proclaiming, “To be Despicable Me, you always have to be prepared for danger!” accidentally triggers an emergency anesthesia gun and provides some comedic relief by unintentionally anesthetizing himself and taking a tumble. Amid the crisis, Gru Junior showcases unexpected skills and reveals a villainous potential not inferior to his father’s, heightening expectations for the young villain’s schemes. Above all, the minions, an integral part of the Despicable Me series, grab the audience’s attention. From new ninja minions, who appear masked alongside the Gru family, to their fascination with a strange vending machine game, their irresistible charms, now stronger and even more adorable, are sure to melt the hearts of prospective viewers.

The new tale of Despicable Me 4, set to turn the world upside down once again in 2024, will make its theatrical debut on July 24.
