Disney’s Coco Voice Actor Ana Ofelia Murguía Dies Aged 90

Ana Ofelia Murguía, the Mexican actress who voiced the character of Mama Coco in Pixar’s animated film *Coco* has passed away at the age of 90.

On December 31st (local time), the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (NIFA) in Mexico announced in an official statement, “Legendary actress Ana Ofelia Murguía has passed away at the age of 90.”

NIFA expressed, “We mourn the passing of Ana Ofelia Murguía with deep sorrow. Her career as an actress played a very important role in Mexico’s performing arts industry”

Ana Ofelia Murguía received global love for her role in *Coco*, where she voiced Mama Coco, the great-grandmother of Miguel, a Mexican boy who travels to the Land of the Dead to uncover his family’s past.

In *Coco*, the scene where Mama Coco and Miguel sing “Remember Me” together touched many viewers. Ana Ofelia Murguía gained honor at the Academy Awards for Best Original Song through “Remember Me.”

In April of last year, Ana Ofelia Murguía was awarded a medal from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in recognition of her contributions to Mexican film and theater. At the time, she expressed after receiving the medal, “This profession was my life and passion. I loved this job.”

Born in 1933, Ana Ofelia Murguía appeared in over 100 works including *Coco* (2018), *Queen of the Night* (1994), and *Nobody Will Speak of Us When We’re Dead* (1995), establishing herself as a representative actress of Mexico.
