After the film’s disappointing box office performance, Sony Pictures has scrapped plans for a Madame Web television series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, disappointing ticket sales after its release on February 14 led Sony to abandon the planned Madame Web television series.

Madame Web recorded a freshness index of 13% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is the lowest score among movies based on Marvel Comics characters. The box office performance over the first weekend after its release was only $15.33 million, recording the lowest among the Sony Spider-Man Universe series.

Sony’s attempt to spin a web of success beyond Spider-Man fizzles led to a 10-year hiatus for the Madame Web series. An official acknowledged, “It’s time to re-evaluate our approach to superhero films.”

An analysis was shared that the failure of Madame Web could be due to including a female protagonist. An anonymous source shared, “Superhero movies have 65-70% male audiences. With a high percentage of male viewership, it’s hard to say if a female hero can lead.”

Madame Web is from the Sony Spider-Man Universe, featuring a paramedic named Cassie Web who becomes clairvoyant after a fatal accident and works to fight against Simms, the villain featured in the film.

Marvel Studios failed at the box office with The Marvels, featuring Captain Marvel as the main hero. Many have expressed their disapproval of the sudden increase in female hero films and cited it as the reason for the successive failures of recent hero films.
