Drama Off-Screen: KBS Bans Appearances of Convicted Squid Game Actor O Yeong Su

inews24 Views

KBS has banned actor O Yeong Su from appearing on its programs after he was convicted on charges of sexual assault. The broadcaster is also considering a similar ban for singer Kim Ho Joong, who was recently arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and hit-and-run.

On the 28th, KBS announced, “The Broadcasting Appearance Regulation Committee has upgraded its regulation on O Yeong Su from ‘recommendation for restraint in casting’ to an ‘appearance suspension’ as of the 13th.” This means not only is O banned from appearing on broadcasts but is also pixelated in archived footage.

O made his debut in the 1968 play Daytime Park Walk and recently gained attention for his role in the 2021 Netflix original series Squid Game.

However, he was handed over to trial after a reinvestigation into allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman in 2017. Despite O claiming his innocence, he was sentenced to eight months in prison and two years of probation during the first trial in March. O is currently appealing the decision.

Meanwhile, KBS will hold a Broadcasting Appearance Regulation Committee meeting on the 29th to review the appearance ban for Kim Ho Joong, who was arrested on charges of a DUI and hit-and-run. Kim is accused of causing a traffic accident in Seoul’s Gangnam District on the 9th, by colliding with a taxi on the opposite side while driving under the influence and then fleeing the scene.

Following his arrest after a warrant hearing at the Seoul Central District Court on the 24th, there has been a flurry of petitions on the KBS viewer message board calling for a ban on Kim Ho Joong’s appearances. The petition has already met the requirement of 1,000 signatures and is now awaiting a response.
