Concerns about U.S.-South Korea relations persist following the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
In response, the U.S. government reaffirmed its commitment to the alliance and expressed confidence in President Han Duck Soo’s interim leadership.
The Pentagon announced on Friday that Acting Defense Minister Kim Sun Ho and U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin held a phone call to address recent security developments on the Korean Peninsula, coordination of North Korea policy, and other key issues related to the U.S.-South Korea alliance.
During the call, both officials underscored the resilience of the alliance, emphasizing its strength regardless of the current security environment or political changes. Secretary Austin reaffirmed the U.S.’s commitment to close cooperation to uphold the alliance, while Acting Minister Kim expressed gratitude for the U.S. government’s steadfast support.
The two leaders also agreed to maintain a joint defense posture and respond promptly to any North Korean provocations. As part of their coordinated efforts, they discussed and assessed the latest developments in North Korea.
Earlier, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, speaking at a meeting in Washington, D.C., expressed full support for Acting President Han Duck Soo. Campbell also announced plans to resume high-level, in-person communications before President Joe Biden’s term ends.
Campbell stated that the U.S. has supported South Korea’s constitutional measures during these uncertain times and is confident in the country’s ability to navigate this challenging period.
He added that Acting President Han, with decades of experience in the South Korean government and previous service as ambassador to the U.S., is a well-known and trusted figure to them.
