Revealing the champion of domestic copyright royalties
Over 240 registered songs
Pdogg, the composer who created BTS songs

The Korea Herald

The champion of domestic music copyright royalties has been revealed.

The 9th KOMCA Copyright Awards, hosted by the Korean Music Copyright Association, was held in February.

Awards were given in various categories, but the winner of the copyright award drew the most attention.

The Copyright Award is given to the lyricist and composer who earned the most copyright royalties in each field during the year, and it is a great honor for the winners.

Significantly, as the K-POP market expands and interest in pop music increases, there has been a lot of attention on who the winner in the pop music category is.

Amid this, the 2023 award winner for the pop music lyricist and composer category was revealed to be Pdogg (Kang Hyo-won). Well-known as the producer of the boy band BTS, he set a record by winning the grand prize for the fifth consecutive year through this award.

Considering that about 240 of Pdogg’s songs registered with the Copyright Association are mostly songs of the global group BTS, this is not a surprising record.

Big Hit Music

Pdogg, who has produced numerous hits, is known to earn about 3.4 million USD in annual copyright royalties.

But his income doesn’t end there.

According to the HYBE semi-annual report released in 2021, Pdogg received $33.8 million in compensation in the first half of the year alone.

This is the highest amount of employee compensation in 2021, and it is known to be more than the retirement allowance of Chung Mong-Koo, honorary chairman of Hyundai Motor Group.

As this fact became a hot topic, there was also interest in who the copyright holder following Pdogg is.

However, since the Korean Music Copyright Association does not disclose the income of composers to the public, there is no way to know who earned how much.

Park Jin-young, the composer who won the most awards after Pdogg, took the grand prize for three consecutive years from 2011 to 2013.

Since his solo singer days, he has produced numerous self-written songs. He has established himself as a top hitmaker by showing the entertainment company JYP Entertainment and producing god, Wonder Girls, 2PM, TWICE, etc.

His representative songs include “Don’t Leave Me,” “Only You,” Wonder Girls’ “Tell Me,” and 2PM’s “Heartbeat”.

Following him, composer Kim Do-hoon, who won the grand prize twice in 2014 and 2016, ranked third. He has worked on a variety of songs across various genres, including SES’s “Just A Feeling,” SG Wannabe’s “Sin and Punishment,” SeeYa’s “Love’s Greeting,” and IU’s “Marshmallow.”

Recently, he produced MSG Wannabe’s “Foolish Love” and “Do You Want to Hear,” demonstrating his unwavering skills.
