Zero On-site Tickets, All Online Ticketing
Inconvenience for the Elderly Excluded from Digitalization

A heartbreaking story of an elderly LG Twins fan who couldn’t buy tickets online and was told that the tickets were sold out when he went to buy them on-site has been shared.

On the 8th, JTBC’s ‘Close-Up Camera’ reported on the stories of elderly people who are excluded because they are unfamiliar with online services.

According to the report, Mr. Lee, an LG Twins fan, recently stood in line at the ticket office at a baseball stadium. However, the ticket office informed him, “Sir, we’re sold out today.”

Mr. Lee, seemingly in disbelief, repeatedly asked, “Are there really none left? Not even in the outfield? Not a single one?” but the answer was always that they were sold out.

This Korean Series game had accepted pre-bookings online, and while canceled tickets could be purchased on-site, no canceled tickets were available. Despite being told that the tickets were sold out, he couldn’t easily leave the stadium due to his disappointment.

Other elderly fans were in the same situation. One of them lamented, “If they sell all the tickets 100% online, people like me who are almost seventy can’t buy them, can we? I’ve been a fan since MBC Blue Dragon, but I can’t get in.”

Newsroom

In response to this, netizens showed reactions such as “This could be our parents or my future,” “Please let us all enjoy baseball together,” and “For the elderly, at least 10% of the tickets should be reserved for on-site sales”. Young fans of the LG Twins also agreed, saying, “Baseball is a sport that all ages can enjoy, so we hope the team will limit online ticket sales.”

Although there are cultural programs that teach how to use smartphones and apps in each local government, it can still be a difficult task for some seniors. Some have said, “Even though we can’t stop change, it’s our society’s responsibility to ensure that those who find it difficult to keep up are not excluded.”
