NewJeans Electrify 2023 LoL World Championship with Epic Opening Act
Girl group NewJeans heated the e-sports festival atmosphere with their overwhelming opening performance at the 2023 League of Legends (LoL) World Championship finals.
NewJeans (Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, Hyein) took the stage for the opening performance at the 2023 LoL World Championship finals held at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Guro-gu, Seoul, on the 19th, performing “GODS” for the first time.
Last month, the organizers announced “GODS” as the theme song of this year’s LoL World Cup. NewJeans performed the theme song for the first time and decorated the opening stage of the finals, proving their status as a global trend artist.
The LoL World Championship’s Global Impact
The LoL World Championship finals is a global event that attracts as much attention as the Super Bowl in the U.S. professional football (NFL), with more viewers (based on 2019 data). Top-tier artists who have performed the theme songs in the past, such as Imagine Dragons (2014) and Lil Nas X (2022), have appeared.
The LoL World Cup, held in Korea for the first time in five years, attracted great anticipation for NewJeans’ opening performance even before it began, especially after T1’s Ryu “Keria” Min-seok confirmed his final appearance and shouted, “NewJeans, come out!” which became a hot topic online.
NewJeans’ Powerful Opening Act
As NewJeans, transformed into five warriors, appeared, the 18,000 people filling the Gocheok Dome cheered in unison. NewJeans dominated the stage with a powerful and disciplined dance routine in line with the grand atmosphere of “GODS,” along with dancers. It was a fresh side of them, different from their usual free-spirited charm on stage. Large LED screens, fireworks, lighting, and various devices further enriched the stage, and the implementation of 3D technology on and off the stage created a more dynamic presentation.
To flawlessly execute the performance of “GODS,” a song that encapsulates the fierce competition and narrative of the players’ victory, NewJeans studied the actual LoL world in preparation for the performance. They even created costumes and accessories inspired by LoL characters, leaving no detail overlooked.
Immediately after the performance, ‘#NewJeans’ trended on X (formerly Twitter), proving that the finals’ opening was as hot a topic as the finals match itself.
