Infielder Josh Donaldson (38), who won the 2015 American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in Major League Baseball (MLB), has announced his retirement.

AP reported on the 5th that Donaldson expressed his intention to retire through a podcast broadcast.

Donaldson said, “I’m sad that I won’t be able to do what I love anymore, but I’m happy to start the second chapter of my life with my family.”

Donaldson, who debuted in the big leagues with the Oakland Athletics in 2010, posted a batting average of 0.261, 279 home runs, and 816 RBIs in a total of 1,384 games until the 2023 season.

In 2015, while playing for the Toronto Blue Jays, he had a stellar year with a batting average of 0.297, 41 home runs, 123 RBIs, and 122 runs scored.

After enjoying his prime time in Toronto, Donaldson transferred to the Milwaukee Brewers during the 2018 season and continued his performance with the Atlanta Braves in 2019, posting a batting average of 0.259, 37 home runs, and 94 RBIs.

Ahead of the 2020 season, he signed a four-year contract with the Minnesota Twins for a total of $92 million. However, he fell short of expectations in Minnesota.

Donaldson, who had been struggling, was traded to the New York Yankees ahead of the 2022 season and was released from the Yankees in the middle of last year.

Donaldson signed a minor league contract with Milwaukee and aimed for a comeback, but he could not stop the passage of time and posted a poor performance in 17 big league games, with a batting average of 0.169, 3 home runs, and 11 RBIs.
