Putin, Xi’s May Summit: Closer Look at Russia-China Strategic Partnership

Vladimir Putin, who has been confirmed for a fifth term as the Russian president, will hold a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in China in May.

According to Yonhap News on the 19th, Reuters reported that President Putin will visit China in May to hold a summit with President Xi Jinping.

It is expected to be the first overseas visit of Putin’s new term.

Putin won his fifth term with an overwhelming 87% of the vote in the presidential election held from the 15th to the 17th.

Xi visited Russia for the first time in March last year after starting his third consecutive term. The two leaders also met and held talks in China in October last year.

Russia and China are strengthening their economic and diplomatic relations, parading their closeness.

On the 17th, after his victory in the presidential election, Putin emphasized the close relationship between China and Russia, saying, “The relationship between China and Russia is sustainable.”

In a congratulatory message to Putin, who confirmed his fifth term, Xi stated, “China highly values the development of China-Russia relations and is willing to maintain close communication with Russia.”
