According to IT media MacRumors on the 18th (GMT), the iPhone 16 camera will be released this fall. It is expected to be a significant upgrade compared to iPhone 15. Based on the MacRumors report, we can explore six critical anticipated changes in the new model.

1. Vertical Camera Layout

The first significant change will be a vertical camera layout. While the iPhone 15 has cameras arranged diagonally, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are expected to have a vertical camera layout. There will also be two camera rings for the comprehensive and ultra-wide cameras. With this vertical camera layout, spatial video recording is expected to be available. Currently, it is only available on the iPhone 15 Pro model.

2. Ultra-wide Lens Upgrade

The second upgrade involves the ultra-wide lens. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models are expected to feature a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera lens, which should capture more light. This will likely result in higher-quality photos when shooting in 0.5 X mode in low-light conditions. Shooting 48-megapixel ProRAW photos in ultra-wide mode will be available while maintaining more detail in the image file, allowing for higher-quality prints.

3. Super-Telephoto Lens

The third feature is the super-telephoto lens. The iPhone 16 Pro Max could be the first to feature a super-telephoto periscope lens that dramatically increases optical zoom capabilities. ‘ Super’ or ‘Ultra’ telephoto generally refer to cameras with a focal length exceeding 300mm. Super-telephoto cameras are often used for sports and wildlife photography and are ideal for portrait photography.

4. Periscope Lens

The fourth feature is the periscope lens. It’s currently only available on the iPhone 15 Pro Max and is also expected to be featured on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. With its ‘foldable’ design to fit inside the smartphone, The periscope lens will allow up to 5x optical zoom and up to 25x digital zoom.

5. Lens Flare Reduction

The fifth feature is lens flare reduction. MacRumors explained that Apple is testing a new anti-reflective optical coating technology that can reduce lens flare and ghosting, thereby improving photo quality. Lens flare is a phenomenon where light is scattered or reflected in the lens, creating a false image of the original photo. On the other hand, ghosting is when a vital light source in the image is reflected on the internal lens or sensor surface, creating a reflection of the image.

6. Capture Button

The sixth feature is the capture button. All iPhone 16 models are expected to include a new camera-based ‘capture button’ for capturing a quick image or from a video footage. Pressing the capture button lightly is expected to allow users to focus on a subject. Whereas holding the button will activate video recording. Additional features, such as swiping the button left or right to zoom in or out, are also expected. MacRumors also suggests that the capture button will be located on the bottom right of the iPhone 16.
