Tragedy struck Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on the 4th of September when a student opened fire, resulting in 13 casualties, including both fatalities and injuries.
CNN reported that the incident occurred at the high school, which is approximately 70 kilometers (about 43 miles) northeast of Atlanta. The shooting left four dead and nine others injured.
The victims include teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irwin, as well as students Mason Shumate and Christian Anglo. According to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, the nine injured individuals—eight students and one teacher—are receiving treatment at the hospital, and no additional fatalities are anticipated.
The suspect, Colt Gray, is a 14-year-old student at the school. He surrendered and was arrested immediately after confronting school security personnel who responded to the scene.
The motive for the attack remains unclear. However, AP News reported that Gray had previously come under police scrutiny last May after posting online about planning a shooting at the school.
The suspect used an assault rifle during the incident. Authorities had previously discovered a shotgun at Gray’s home during last year’s investigation but determined that it would be challenging for him to use without parental supervision. Consequently, they issued a warning for ongoing monitoring and released him.
Authorities are now investigating how the firearm used in the shooting was obtained and how the suspect managed to bring it into the school.
