The Chinese government has congratulated Trump, who secured victory in the U.S. presidential election.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated on its website (Q&A format) at 11:30 PM on Wednesday: “We respect the choice of the American people.”

The Foreign Ministry remained cautious earlier that day during a regular press briefing held on Wednesday at 3 PM despite Trump’s likely victory.

Spokesperson Mao Ning said, when asked about Trump’s stance on raising tariffs against China, “We do not answer hypothetical questions.” When asked about the potential impact of the U.S. election outcome on China’s foreign policy or bilateral relations, Mao offered a general response: “China’s policy on the U.S. is consistent. We will continue to view and handle our bilateral relations under the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.”

Furthermore, when asked if Chinese President Xi Jinping would congratulate Trump by phone after his apparent victory, Mao indicated that they would address such matters per established protocols once the official U.S. election results are announced.

CNN and Reuters reported that Xi had called Trump to offer congratulations on Wednesday. However, there has been no official confirmation from the Chinese side. Chinese state media has not reported on this matter, and the Foreign Ministry has not provided any additional comments.
