(Illustration by Park Ji-young/The Korea Herald)A woman in her 20s has been sentenced to seven years in prison for attempting to murder her mother-in-law. The incident occurred after the young woman became enraged by her mother-in-law’s interference in an argument with her husband.

The Busan District Court handed down the verdict on Tuesday, finding the defendant guilty of attempted murder. The attack took place on April 25 at approximately 10:25 p.m. in the defendant’s Busan residence. The altercation began when the defendant was engaged in a heated phone conversation with her husband over financial matters. The situation escalated when her mother-in-law interjected, saying, “A woman shouldn’t be so loud.”

In a fit of rage, the defendant violently attacked her mother-in-law, stabbing her eight times with a kitchen knife while simultaneously strangling her. Fortunately, the injuries sustained were not life-threatening. It was revealed that the defendant, her husband, and the victim all shared the same living space.

During the investigation, it came to light that the defendant’s fury had reached such a fever pitch that she had declared her intention to “stab whomever to death.”

The court stated in its ruling, “The defendant clearly intended to end the victim’s life. The victim has suffered substantial physical and psychological trauma and is seeking severe punishment for the defendant.”

The court also noted that this was not the defendant’s first brush with the law. In October 2020, she had been convicted by the same court for special bodily injury, which involves harm inflicted using a weapon or collective force. She served her sentence at Cheongju Women’s Correctional Institution and was released in July 2024.

While deliberating on the sentence, the court took into account that the crime was not premeditated and that the victim survived the attack. However, the defendant’s decision to turn herself in did not mitigate her punishment, given her status as a repeat offender of serious crimes.
