The Mercedes-AMG SL 43, a luxury roadster recently introduced to the Korean market, is an enticing choice for young, single drivers seeking an unforgettable ride.
The Korea Herald had the opportunity to put the new vehicle through its paces in a comprehensive test drive that spanned urban, rural, and highway environments.
Measuring 4,705 mm in length, 1,915 mm in width, and 1,365 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm, the Mercedes-AMG SL 43 boasts a sleek and distinctive design that embodies the German automaker’s signature sportiness.
The wide grille makes a bold statement, while the long wheelbase and hood, paired with short overhangs and a sharply raked windshield, convey power and performance. Circular exhaust outlets replace the Mercedes-AMG SL 63’s angular tailpipe trim, and a smoother rear bumper completes the SL 43’s streamlined profile.
The interior strikes a balance between sportiness and digital convenience. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 11.9-inch center touchscreen provide a high-tech feel, while the AMG performance steering wheel with a one-click manual gear change enhances the driving experience.
The racing-inspired front seats contribute to the sporty ambiance. Although rear seats are present, their limited legroom suggests they are more for show than practicality.
Powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the AMG SL 43 lives up to its reputation as a speedster. With a maximum output of 421 horsepower and peak torque of 51 kg-m, the car demonstrates impressive acceleration and gear shifts.
In comfort mode, the engine note is surprisingly subdued for such a potent vehicle. However, switch to sport mode, and the AMG SL 43 flexes its muscles, effortlessly overtaking on highways while maintaining stability and poise through corners, even when navigating winding roads at higher speeds.
As a key feature of any convertible, the soft top underwent multiple open-close cycles during our test. The mechanism is user-friendly, operated via the center touchscreen. The transformation takes about 15 seconds and can be performed while driving at speeds up to 60 km/h.
Despite the hot and humid weather, open-top driving was enjoyable with the climate control set to full blast. Whether due to its striking appearance or the top-down driving in sweltering heat, the roadster turned heads wherever it went.
In conclusion, the Mercedes-AMG SL 43 offers an enticing package for young, single drivers seeking a premium roadster experience. However, with a starting price of 155.6 million KRW (112,000 USD), this convertible speedster isn’t for everyone.
