People were shocked by the bizarre act committed by a third-year middle school boy who sexually assaulted a woman in her 40s.

Recently, the Nonsan Police Station in South Chungcheong Province arrested and detained a 16-year-old middle school student, Yoon (alias), on charges of robbery and rape, theft, and assault. Yoon is accused of kidnapping and brutally beating a woman, Ms. A, who was returning home around 2 a.m. on the 3rd of last month and then sexually assaulting her.

Ms. A, who was drunk, mistook him for someone she knew and got on his motorcycle without suspicion. Yoon took Ms. A, who was on his motorcycle, to an elementary school in Nonsan and sexually assaulted her. He forced her to close her eyes and undress, and during the bizarre sexual act, he choked and brutally assaulted the victim. According to the JTBC program Crime Chief, the victim said, “I was dragged around and hit. I was hit once every three seconds.”

During the crime, Yoon committed bizarre acts against Ms. A that cannot be explicitly mentioned in this article.

Despite Ms. A’s resistance, asking “Do you have parents?” Yoon grabbed her by the hair and continued to assault her. Yoon also threatened to harm and bury her daughter if she reported the incident and even filmed the victim’s naked body with his mobile phone camera. After about an hour of crime, Yoon fled and stole Ms. A’s clothes, money, and mobile phone. The brutal crime scene was fully captured on the elementary school’s surveillance camera where the crime occurred.

The victim had to ask for help from a passing car, naked and unable to dress herself. Yoon was caught on the day of the crime in Nonsan.

Ms. A’s daughter played a crucial role in the arrest of Yoon by using the location tracking feature on her mother’s mobile phone. She went to a specific location through mobile phone location tracking. There was a suspicious motorcycle parked. When she called her mother’s mobile phone, the ringtone rang from the luggage compartment of the motorcycle. Ms. A’s daughter immediately reported to the police and the police who were dispatched arrested Yoon.

During the police investigation, Yoon confessed that he initially intended to rob her but ended up sexually assaulting her. He admitted that he had stolen the motorcycle used in the crime. It was reported that when the police caught Yoon, he asked the victim’s side to settle for 10 million won (approximately $8,500).

Ms. A, who was already suffering from trauma, fainted from the shock when she heard that the perpetrator was a middle school student. In an interview with JTBC, she said, “I collapsed when I heard that the perpetrator was a middle school student. He’s not even in his 20s; how can a middle school student be so bizarre?”

Netizens were also shocked to hear that Yoon had committed a brutal and audacious crime that surpassed those of adult criminals. Because the content of the crime was so horrific, there were claims among netizens that he should be permanently isolated from society. Reactions such as “He’s not a petty thief who became a big thief. He’s already a big thief. Isolate him from society forever” poured out.

The problem is that Yoon, a juvenile offender (from 14 to under 19), will receive a lighter punishment than an adult. The Juvenile Law stipulates that for crimes punishable by imprisonment for two years or more, the short-term punishment is up to 5 years, and the long-term punishment is up to 10 years (7 years short-term and 15 years long-term for aggravated crimes under the Specific Violent Crimes Act). Even in the case of the death penalty and life imprisonment, a sentence of more than 15 years (up to 20 years for aggravated crimes under the Specific Violent Crimes Act) cannot be requested.
