① Pohang, Roller Coaster Walkway
A must-visit place in Pohang is Homigot, famous for its sunrise. Homigot Sunrise Square is the first place in South Korea where the sun rises. The old name of Pohang City, Yeongil, also means to greet the sun.
In Homigot, there is a bronze hand statue called Hands of Harmony. This is one of the most well-known modern art pieces, and many people think of the Hand of Coexistence when they think of Homigot.
Thus, from the past to the present, Homigot has been a trademark of Pohang. However, recently, another place in Pohang has rapidly emerged as a new landmark.
In 2021, the walkable roller coaster Spacewalk was opened. The Spacewalk, located in the Buk-gu district of Pohang, is a work donated to the citizens of Pohang by POSCO, who planned, produced, and installed it.
The reason why it was named Spacewalk is that if you slowly walk along the track, you’ll feel as if you’re walking above the clouds and floating in space.
The scenery here is beautiful, but as you climb this place that reminds you of a roller coaster, you can’t help but feel dizzy.
The Spacewalk is designed to withstand strong wind speeds and a 6.5 magnitude earthquake, but it’s said to shake more than the ‘swaying bridge’ in Paju.
Not only that, but the stairs are steep, and the steepness increases as you go up. Since the stairs are made of metal, you need to be extra careful not to get hurt.
② Pohang’s Symbol, Spacewalk
Nevertheless, the Spacewalk is where tourists never stop visiting, as it perfectly represents Pohang, the City of Iron and Light.
The iron-made Spacewalk symbolizes the title of Pohang as the ‘City of Iron,’ created by the legend of POSCO.
Also, the sunrise and sunset of Yeongil Bay that can be seen here represent Pohang, the ‘City of Light.’
The designers of the Spacewalk are the German artists Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth. The couple is internationally renowned for their audience’s participatory installation art and architectural sculpture.
They visited Pohang several times while creating the Spacewalk, exploring the image of Pohang.
As a result, they embedded the symbol of Pohang in the Spacewalk.
The Spacewalk comprises three themes: ‘Song of Light and Iron,’ ‘Slow Walking,’ and ‘Cloud-Walking Above the Clouds.’
How about visiting the Spacewalk in Pohang, the ‘City of Light and Iron,’ and slowly walking in the clouds on a roller coaster? However, please note that you cannot climb the 360-degree turning stairs in the photo for safety reasons.
③ Pohang Sea Walkway
The ‘Skywalk’ is also one of the walkways in Pohang. This is a walkway located a 30-minute walk or a 6-minute drive from the Spacewalk.
The Skywalk is famous as the longest sea walkway in Korea. The center of the Skywalk structure is made of transparent special glass, so when you look down, you feel as if you are floating on the sea.
While walking here, you can see the entire view of Yeongil Bay and the Homi Peninsula.
On the left side of the Homi Peninsula, there are Ulleungdo and Dokdo, and you can also see Homigot, widely known as a sunrise spot, from here.
In the center of the sea skywalk, there is a round seawater pool. The seawater is clear and clean, so if you go down here, you can see the seafish with your eyes.
Another sea walkway in Pohang that cannot be left out is the ‘Agari Anchor Observatory.’ The reason it’s called the Agari ‘Anchor’ Observatory is because the shape of the observatory resembles an ‘anchor.’
The observatory is located on the Agari makeshift beach, where the sea has a beautiful emerald color. The scenery here is even more attractive, with the small red-roofed lighthouse situated at the end of the observatory.
The beach below the Anchor Observatory is not suitable for swimming because it has a lot of rocks, but it is a beautiful beach with numerous rock formations. They say there’s a photo zone using the shape of the rocks, so it might be nice to walk along the beach.
This beautiful scenery was used as a filming location for a drama. After being known as a major filming location for the popular drama ‘Run On’ aired on JTBC, many tourists have been visiting here.
You can feel the tranquility of the quiet winter sea on the sea walkway. How about visiting Pohang this winter, where there are numerous tourist destinations besides Homigot and the Hand of Coexistence?
