Top 10 High-Energy Dog Breeds That Demand Daily Walks

daily Views

Pets, particularly dogs, are an integral part of family life, providing joy and companionship. Dogs with high activity levels are generally energetic and affectionate, making them excellent companions for owners who enjoy various activities. To maintain their health and keep them lively, these dogs need a sufficient amount of exercise, and owners should take on a greater responsibility in raising them. Here are 10 breeds of dogs that require daily walks and exercise.

Beagle

Beagles, known for their exceptional sense of smell and ability to detect drugs, have been used as hunting dogs for centuries. They are typically laid-back, cheerful, and mischievous, earning them the nickname “rascal dogs.” Compared to other breeds, Beagles have a significantly higher level of activity and curiosity. Therefore, they are better suited to living in a house with a spacious yard or play area than in an apartment or multi-unit housing.

Siberian Husky

Despite their intimidating and cynical appearance, Siberian Huskies are gentle and playful. They are known to be reliable companions who love people and follow their owners. As they have been sled dogs for centuries, they require a lot of exercise. It is essential to take them for walks for at least two hours a day to expend their energy and keep them active. In addition to walks, they also need regular high-intensity exercise.

Border Collie

Border Collies are known for their remarkable intelligence and determination. They have agility and a balanced physique, making them quick learners and enthusiasts of any training or activity. They excel in exercises like Frisbee and swimming, and due to their high activity levels, they need daily exercise. Therefore, it is necessary to satisfy them through activities such as walks, playtime, and intellectual games. Border Collies are also known to be devoted and loyal to their owners, making them popular pets.

Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are known for their gentle nature and are popular pets both domestically and internationally. They are so intelligent that they rank fourth in the world’s dog breed intelligence, and they are often seen as guide dogs for people with disabilities. Golden Retrievers have a high level of loyalty and form deep bonds with children. They are active and dislike being idle, so it is necessary to help them expend their energy consistently. It is essential to manage their vibrant energy through 3-4 daily walks and playtime.

Shiba Inu

“Shiba” in Japanese means “small,” and this breed is designated as a natural monument in Japan. It was bred in Japan for hunting small wild animals and is currently the most popular pet dog breed in Japan. Shiba Inus are active and need consistent daily walks or exercises. They enjoy running around, so they need a spacious area to move freely. If they don’t get enough exercise, they can feel stressed, and their mood can drop, so proper management and exercise are essential.

German Shepherd Dog

Compared to other breeds, German Shepherds have an excellent sense of smell and a calm temperament, making them widely used as military dogs, search dogs, and drug detection dogs. As one of the large breeds with high activity levels, it is recommended to take them for walks for about two hours a day and engage in intense exercise for about an hour. If they do not get enough exercise, they may exhibit aggressive behaviors such as destroying objects or barking. In addition to physical activities, mental activities that engage their intellect are also important. Providing intellectual stimulation through puzzle toys or training sessions is necessary.

Welsh Corgi

This breed is charming with its short legs and perky ears. Initially, they were herding dogs on farms, herding cows and sheep. Thanks to this active habit, they are fast movers despite their short legs and have a high activity level. Therefore, if you are raising a Welsh Corgi, you should regularly take it for walks and exercise outdoors rather than indoor activities. However, due to their short legs, they can genetically have joint problems, so excessive running or hiking should be avoided.

Dobermann

Dobermans are large dogs with a strong, muscular build and a rich black coat. Due to their high activity level, they require ample exercise space, and if raised in an apartment, obedience training and control are necessary. Also, during walks, they have a habit of pulling forward, and because they are large dogs, they can be challenging to control. Therefore, it is essential to give them walking training from a young age to regulate their behavior and maintain control.

Malamute

One of the large breeds, Malamutes, has a muscular physique and is excellent at performing heavy tasks. As a sled dog breed, they boast robust stamina and activity. They have a daily activity range of 250 km, equivalent to running a marathon distance back and forth five times. For this reason, they may feel stressed due to lack of exercise and hot weather if raised in urban areas. For these reasons, it is recommended for owners who have ample time and space and can physically handle raising a Malamute.

Dachshund

With their long bodies and short legs, Dachshunds are pretty charming. The name “Dachshund” means “badger dog” in German. Although they are small dogs, and you might expect them to have low activity levels, they have a history of being badger-hunting dogs, making them quick and quite active. They enjoy running and playing, and they love to burn off energy through walks and playtime.
