Beverage that Sold Out Instantly After BTS Jungkook Took a Sip

daily Views

Remember the Kombucha that caused a sell-out frenzy because Jungkook from BTS was regularly drinking it? Even after that, the popularity of Kombucha has not waned, and sales are soaring. So, what is Kombucha, and why is it so sought-after for its health benefits? And can it be consumed like any other beverage, or are there any precautions to be taken? Let’s take a look.

What exactly is Kombucha?

Kombucha is a fermented drink made by adding beneficial bacteria composed of various yeast cells and microbes to black or green tea sweetened with sugar. The beneficial bacteria here are the probiotics that we commonly know. During the fermentation process, carbon dioxide is produced, giving Kombucha its fizzy taste. Kombucha has been especially popular since the early 2000s when Hollywood stars began to drink it as a healthier alternative to carbonated drinks for weight management.

The Health Benefits of Kombucha

Kombucha is indeed low in calories and beneficial for gut health. The probiotics used in making Kombucha inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in the gut, boosting immunity, relieving constipation, and promoting digestion. The gluconic acid in Kombucha helps detoxify the body by expelling toxic substances to the kidneys. Also, the polyphenols in Kombucha remove active oxygen, preventing aging.

Side Effects of Overconsumption

However, overconsumption of Kombucha can lead to side effects. Consuming it on an empty stomach or in large quantities can cause stomach upset or poor digestion. As the amount of lactic acid in the body increases, a state of reduced metabolism can occur. Kombucha, being fermented with sugar, can lead to weight gain and difficulty in blood sugar control if consumed excessively.

Contains Small Amounts of Alcohol and Caffeine

Kombucha produces a small amount of alcohol as a byproduct during the fermentation process and also contains caffeine. Therefore, people sensitive to alcohol and caffeine should be cautious when consuming it, and it is especially recommended for pregnant women to consult a doctor before consuming Kombucha.

Boosts Immunity and Metabolism

Kombucha, which contains probiotics, helps boost immunity by inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria in the gut and increasing the body’s resistance. It is also rich in acetic acid, which gives a sour taste. When absorbed into our body, it transforms into citric acid, facilitating energy production in the body.

Food, Not Medicine

Despite the many benefits of Kombucha, it’s important to remember that it’s food, not medicine. It’s best to consume it as a healthy beverage like other fermented foods and it’s recommended to limit consumption to three cups a day. As it can put a strain on the liver and kidneys, it’s best for those with liver issues or kidney diseases to avoid drinking Kombucha.

The Kombucha Craze from Overseas

For a few years now, international stars have been expressing their love for Kombucha, and it has even caused a sell-out frenzy in Korea after being introduced by a famous celebrity. Not only that, but its detox and diet effects have made it popular not only in the U.S. but also in Europe, Australia, and Japan. Kombucha is even served as a welcome tea in world-class hotel restaurants, and there’s a tale that Emperor Qin Shi Huang drank Kombucha daily.

The Growing Kombucha Market in Korea

According to Naver Data Lab statistics, Kombucha is receiving considerable attention in Korea, ranking third in search volume in the beverage category. Global beverage companies such as Coca-Cola and Starbucks have jumped into the Kombucha market, and domestic companies are also entering the market one after another.

Diversified into Cosmetics and Shampoos

Apart from beverages, Kombucha is gradually diversifying into cosmetics and shampoos. Products containing Kombucha extract, such as moisturizing cream, ampoules, mists, masks, and shampoos, are drawing significant attention. The Kombucha market is expected to continue to grow, with projections reaching $7 billion, or about 8.4 trillion KRW, by 2027.

A Healthy Pleasure Replacing Carbonated Drinks

With the growing interest in healthy beauty, a new term, “healthy pleasure,” has emerged recently. It refers to the practice of enjoying delicious and healthy food while maintaining health. Kombucha, with its great taste and superior nutritional content, is rising as a food that fits the definition of healthy pleasure, replacing carbonated drinks and becoming a hot item among many in the MZ generation.
