Netflix Struggles in Korea: Viewers Unhappy with Recent Original Content

The top streaming service, Netflix, is facing difficulties in Korea.

Viewers expressed disappointment with recent Netflix original shows D.P. 2 and Hellbound, leading to decreased engagement.

Hellbound, a K-creature drama series starring Park Seo Jun and Han So Hee, divided audiences despite boasting a top-tier cast and a $59 million budget. Critics and viewers debated the script and acting alongside the drama’s unique historical setting.

Following the July release of D.P. 2, the overall quality of Netflix’s original productions had become a recurring topic of discussion. Specifically, D.P. 2 was compared to its predecessor, with viewers finding it less fulfilling than the first season.

The recent changes to Netflix’s UX are also being highlighted as a point of distraction. Some users share, “Since the recent changes to the UX, content descriptions no longer display a helpful plot description but a positive review. The description section no longer serves its purpose.”

Another viewer complained, “The movie ‘Dune’ contains the description ‘This film won 6 Academy Awards’, which tells me nothing.”

Netflix is beta-testing its UX and randomizing user descriptions as part of its development.
