Apple Faces Scrutiny Over Alleged Monopoly about In-app Payment Service in Russia

Daniel Kim Views

Signs of Apple violating antimonopoly regulations in Russia have been detected.

The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) in Russia sent a letter to Apple on the 4th (local time) asking why Russian users cannot utilize all banking and payment services functions while using Apple Inc. devices.

The FAS stated that most Russian banks had been excluded from Apple’s App Store, and since apps installed outside the App Store were not allowed, contactless services were not available.

In a statement, the FAS said, “Apple’s actions show signs of violating the antimonopoly law,” and “We have sent a letter to Apple needing a detailed position on this issue.”

Over the past two years, the FAS has fined Apple about $26 million for abusing its dominant position in the mobile app market and in-app payments.

In a previous response, Apple expressed disagreement and opposition to the FAS ruling, which indicates that Apple provided a competitive advantage to its products through the iOS operating system.

However, last month, Apple conceded in a battle to protect the dominance of its App Store on iPhones and other devices in Europe, stating that developers could freely distribute their apps directly to consumers.

As a result, the Digital Markets Act (DMA) was also enacted in the European Union.
