A recent study has shown that a plant-based diet can help alleviate the complications of prostate cancer.
The research investigating the impact of a plant-based diet on the symptoms of prostate cancer was published in the Cancer Journal.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), prostate cancer is the most common and deadly form of cancer among American men. Factors such as aging, family history, obesity, hormone levels, etc. play a role in prostate cancer development. Quitting smoking, exercising, sexual activity, etc. can reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
Past studies have shown that a plant-based diet can also help prevent prostate cancer. Another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has shown that a plant-based diet can slow the progression of prostate cancer.
The research team studied the effects of a plant-based diet on the complications of prostate cancer in about 2,000 early-stage prostate cancer patients. Common complications of prostate cancer include urinary incontinence, urinary disorders such as painful urination, bowel dysfunction, sexual dysfunction, etc.
The patients’ diets were classified into five categories based on the ratio of animal-based foods to plant-based foods consumed.
The study found that those who consumed the most plant-based diet had sexual function scores 8% to 11% higher than those who consumed the least. Urinary function scores were up to 14% higher. In addition, scores for categories such as depression and facial flushing were up to 13% higher.
Based on these results, the researchers concluded that a plant-based diet can help alleviate the symptoms of prostate cancer.
