Men, Beware: Low Testosterone Could Shorten Your Life

A recent study has found a correlation between lower testosterone levels and an increased risk of mortality from all causes.

The study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine suggests that men with low testosterone levels may have a shorter lifespan.

Testosterone is a major male sex hormone that plays a crucial role in the development of male reproductive organs, the growth of the musculoskeletal system, and the growth of body hair.

According to recent studies, sex hormones play a pivotal role in a variety of health issues not only confined to reproductive function. Experts pointed out that diverse health problems have relevance with low testosterone secretion due to lack of sleep, smoking, drinking, excessive saturated fat, and body fat ratio.

The research team analyzed data from 11 studies involving 24,000 participants to examine individual patient data and analyze the correlation between basic hormone concentrations, including testosterone and estradiol, the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, and mortality from all causes.

The study found that men with lower total testosterone concentrations had a higher risk of mortality from all causes. Specifically, men with testosterone concentrations below 7.4 nmol/L (213 ng/dL) had a higher risk of death, regardless of their luteinizing hormone (LH) levels. LH is a hormone that plays a crucial role in the sexual development of children and the reproductive ability of adults.

The researchers noted that these results were particularly evident in the increased mortality rate from cardiovascular diseases. They emphasized that the meta-analysis was based on a rigorous methodology and that the results were significant since the study revealed a correlation between sex hormones and mortality rates in aging men.
