Daniel Kim Views

Uber, the vehicle-sharing platform, is known to be popular in Africa.

According to the American IT online media TechCrunch, Uber recently recorded 1 billion rides on the African continent. Uber revealed that the total distance traveled in Africa is approximately 10 billion km (6.2 billion miles). This record was achieved a decade after Uber opened its first branch in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2013.

Uber has expanded to seven African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Ivory Coast. In 2021, Uber expanded to over 30 key cities across Africa, with the most branches operating in South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria.

According to a recent survey released by Uber, Uber users’ busiest time is around 2 p.m., and the most popular day is Friday. The most popular destination is OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the average Uber ride duration is about 24 minutes.

Several vehicle-sharing platforms are emerging as competitors in Africa. Bolt and Taxify are the most representative. In 2016, Uber drastically reduced its prices by 50% in Kenya to secure its competitiveness.
