Moving to an island in Scotland could earn you £50,000, sparking a buzz. According to the UK’s The Sun, the Scottish government is offering bonds worth £50,000 (approximately $63,000) to each of the first 100 people who move to the islands as part of a policy to curb population decline.

Scotland boasts 93 islands, with places like Orkney and the Isle of Skye ranking among the most picturesque in the world. A family in South America has already shown interest, and several households have submitted their applications.

Alasdair Allan, a Member of the Scottish National Party in the House of Commons, said, “We must do whatever it takes to reverse the trend of population decline.” He added, “People can use the bonds to buy a house, start a business, and build a long-term life here.” Mairi Gougeon, the Minister of Land and Sea, spoke positively, saying, “It will help the islands.” However, Liam McArthur, a member of the Liberal Democrats, expressed an opposing view, saying, “The money should be spent on transportation and housing supply.”

The grants will be provided starting this summer. This is not the first time financial support has been offered to people moving to the islands. In 2019, people living on an island in Greece were given £450 (approximately $570) monthly. In 2020, those moving to an island in Ireland were provided with accommodation and food.
