Spain bans on major tourist streets such as Ibiza and Mallorca.
According to BBC, the Spanish government revised the over-tourism control law that was introduced in 2020. As a result, it is now prohibited to drink alcohol in the streets of major tourist areas in Ibiza and Majorca, part of Spain’s Balearic Islands. Those violating this rule will be fined between $600 and $1,800.
A new provision also bans party boats that sell alcohol. Party boats cannot enter within one nautical mile(about 1.8 km) of designated areas.
The Balearic Islands, consisting of Mallorca, Ibiza, and other large and small islands, are a nightlife hub, attracting young travelers worldwide. However, excessive alcohol consumption by tourists and the resulting immoral behavior have consistently caused problems.
In response, the Spanish government said, “News of young tourists’ rude behavior comes out yearly and causes deep concern for citizens and stakeholders.” They introduced a law in 2020 to control this, restricting alcohol sales and the construction of entertainment facilities.
The newly amended law softens overtourism to responsible tourism. The Spanish government stated, “Tourism accounts for over 45% of the local community’s GDP,” explaining that they replaced the term to avoid negatively impacting the tourism industry.
