Sitting in front of a fan and taking a big bite of a sweet, chilled watermelon can instantly make you forget the heat.

But if the watermelon you bought turns out to be unripe, it can be a real letdown. It is not easy to distinguish between a sweet and unripe watermelon. But do not worry, here are five reliable tips and tricks to pick a delicious watermelon.

1. Pay Attention To The Yellow Spot On The Bottom

When searching for watermelon, you can usually find a yellow spot on the bottom. This field spot indicates the amount of sunlight the watermelon has received. The more intense the yellow, the sweeter the fruit. A watermelon with a deep yellow spot is sweeter than the other fruits.

2. Count The Number Of Webbings On The Surface

The webbing on the surface of a watermelon represents the number of times bees have pollinated the flower. In other words, the more webbings, the riper the watermelon. To find a sweet watermelon, look for one with more webbings.

3. Compare The Shapes

Watermelons come in two different shapes. Oval-shaped watermelons tend to have less flavor, while round watermelons are sweeter.

Therefore, if you want a sweeter watermelon, choose a rounder one. Oval-shaped watermelons tend to have thicker rinds and less flesh, making them less flavorful.

4. Check The Size And The Weight

It’s best to avoid watermelons that are unusually large or small. The best watermelons are of regular sizes. The watermelon’s weight also matters. If the sizes are similar, always choose the heavier watermelon. Heavier watermelons have high water content and they are more likely to be sweeter and refreshing.

5. Look At The Stem

The stem of the watermelon is another sign of ripeness. If the stem is green, it means that the watermelon is harvested prematurely.

Therefore, choose a watermelon with a dry, brown stem. Also, a watermelon with a curly stem tends to be sweeter. Do not forget to check the stem to choose the right watermelon.

With these five tips, anyone can successfully find a sweet watermelon.
