French retail giant Carrefour is set to launch a revolutionary payment system, known as the palm payment system, at its central Paris store in the 6th arrondissement starting on July 29.
According to a report by KBS, this system allows customers to register their palm vein patterns, credit card information, and unique vein patterns. After registration, payments can be made simply by placing their palms on the terminal.
Once the user’s identity is verified, the payment is processed immediately without swiping a card. Carrefour collaborated with Ingenico, a specialist in payment terminals, to develop this technology.
Ingenico stated, “Palm vein patterns are highly intricate and unique to each individual, making this method extremely secure.”
Similar biometric payment technologies are already used at Amazon, an American e-commerce company, and the Japanese supermarket chain Dobu Store.
With Carrefour’s adoption of the palm payment system, it is expected to spread widely in the European market. Carrefour operates in several countries around the world, including France.
However, in 2006, Carrefour sold its local business to E-Land in South Korea and withdrew from the market. The stores were later sold to Homeplus, converting all Carrefour locations to Homeplus stores.
Carrefour emphasized that this payment method will make the transaction process more convenient as customers do not need to take out their credit cards,” regarding data protection, they assured “a high level of security.”
Through this pilot program, Carrefour plans to closely monitor the palm payment system’s effectiveness and customer reactions.
As the first introduction in Europe, Carrefour’s future moves will be closely watched.
