Several British media outlets reported that content creator Liana Foster noticed something was wrong with her throat and saw white spots inside her throat on the first night of her vacation to Antalya, Turkey, with her family.

“I felt really groggy and got a sore throat as well. I was really shaky. I couldn’t eat or drink. I thought it was Covid again. My temperature was bad. My body was aching. I went to the hospital, and they said I have a really bad case of tonsillitis,” Foster said.

Feeling unwell again on the second night, Foster recognized the severity of her condition and rushed to the hospital, and the doctors diagnosed her with severe tonsilitis.

The medical team explained that the mold in the hotel room’s air conditioning likely caused Foster’s illness. The mold spread into the air and entered her mouth, leading to inflammation.

Foster had to spend three days in the hospital to receive treatment.

Viral or bacterial infections are the usual causes of tonsilitis, inflaming the tonsils at the back of the throat.

Symptoms usually last 2 to 4 days and often resolve naturally or with a short course of antibiotics. However, in severe or recurring cases, it may lead to having to remove the tonsils.

Foster stated that she had experienced tonsillitis before, but it had never been this severe. She wanted to warn others to turn off the air conditioning while sleeping if they were unsure about its cleanliness.

Checking the cleanliness of air conditioning units is crucial to prevent incidents like these.

Respiratory issues can occur if the air conditioning filter and interior are not clean, where mold and bacteria can thrive.

Replace or clean the air conditioning filter at least every two weeks and clean the interior regularly every three to six months. If it is difficult to do so yourself, call a professional to check the unit’s cleanliness. The video below is a step-by-step guide for cleaning the interior of a wall-mounted air conditioner.
