10 Korean Dishes You’ve Never Heard Of But Need to Try

Among its offerings are unique dishes that are especially beloved by Koreans, featuring flavors and cooking methods that may be unfamiliar to many. 1. Mideodeok (Korean Stalked Sea Squirt)

This seafood, known for its distinctive shape and texture, grows naturally in the ocean and is typically enjoyed raw, steamed, or grilled. Mideodeok captures the essence of the sea with its fresh, nutty flavor. In the summer, a chilled Mideodeok salad is a popular delicacy that helps beat the heat.

2. Ganjang Gejang

A traditional Korean dish made by marinating fresh blue crabs in a mixture of soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and Cheongyang chili peppers. This process creates a harmonious blend of salty and sweet flavors. Soft crab meat is often enjoyed with rice to enhance its taste. Ganjang Gejang is commonly eaten as a refreshing side dish during the summer.

3. Dotori-muk

This dish is made by dissolving acorn flour in water and allowing it to set, resulting in a jelly-like texture with a nutty yet light flavor. Dotori-muk is considered a healthy food option, particularly popular among dieters. It is typically enjoyed mixed with soy sauce or gochujang (Korean chili paste).

4. Fermented Skate

Known for its potent aroma and flavor, fermented skate is a dish that often polarizes opinions. It is predominantly enjoyed in the Jeollanam-do region, where it is typically paired with pork. 5. Beondegi

8. Sannakji (Live Octopus)

This dish features live octopus, prized for its unique texture and intense flavor. The octopus is freshly cut and served with sesame oil and salt. It is often enjoyed with lettuce wraps or a spicy dipping sauce for an adventurous eating experience.

9. Kkaennip (Perilla Leaves)

Known for their unique aroma, perilla leaves are a staple in Korean cooking. They are often used as wraps for meat dishes and are rich in vitamins and minerals, adding both flavor and nutrition to meals. Kkaennip is especially popular when paired with Korean barbecue.

10. Kongnamul (Soybean Sprouts)

A fundamental ingredient in Korean cuisine, soybean sprouts are used in soups, salads, and stir-fries. Their crunchy texture and light flavor enhance broth-based dishes. Kongnamul can be enjoyed raw or boiled and is often seasoned with gochujang or soy sauce for added flavor.
