A mutant cat with four ears has recently caught attention after being brought to an animal shelter in Tennessee.
According to the New York Post, the True Rescue animal rescue shelter in Tennessee announced on Facebook that a yellow cat with four ears arrived at their shelter in July.
The shelter introduced the cat, saying, “This kitten came into our shelter today with his three other siblings, and he has a rare genetic mutation, having been born with FOUR EARS! You “heard” me right (snort)! He is 8-9 weeks old, weighing just over 2 pounds. “
In the released photos, the cat features two additional small ears positioned in front of its regular ears, totaling four ears. The shelter named this kitten Audio.
Audio and three other kittens were found inside a box tightly wrapped with tape, leaving only air holes. The rescuer discovered the kittens, fed them, and brought them to the shelter.
Four-eared cats are indeed rare, but they have been reported before. According to research cited by the Daily Mail, this unusual trait results from a recessive mutation that affects only the outer ear flaps, or pinnae, while leaving the inner ear mechanism unaffected. Test results confirmed that the cat’s hearing remains normal despite the additional ears.
