10 Shocking Truths About Tanning: Is Your Glow Worth the Risk?

daily Views

A healthy, sun-kissed glow is trendy during the summer months. Many people turn to tanning salons to achieve this attractive color. Tanning occurs when melanocytes in the skin’s basal layer are stimulated, resulting in a darker skin tone. However, excessive tanning can lead to serious health risks.

Prolonged sun exposure is harmful

UV rays can be categorized as UVA, UVB, and UVC based on their wavelength. UVC ranges from 100 to 280 nm and is detrimental to humans. Fortunately, the ozone layer blocks out UVC. However, UVA and UVB can reach the Earth’s surface. Consequently, prolonged exposure can cause skin aging, wrinkles, and skin cancer.

How about artificial tanning?

Tanning beds primarily use UVA, which has a longer wavelength. This makes it less harmful than direct sunlight exposure. However, studies reveal that tanning beds also have associated risks with skin cancer. Therefore, one shouldn’t have more than two sessions a week. Furthermore, each session should last about 10 minutes and not exceed 30 sessions yearly.

Not Enough Vitamin D

While artificial tanning mimics natural sunlight, it fails to produce sufficient vitamin D. Vitamin D is naturally generated in the skin when exposed to sunlight. To be specific, UVB plays a crucial role in synthesis. However, artificial tanning beds only utilize UVA, which does not contribute to vitamin D synthesis.

Melanoma risks

Using tanning machines raises the risk of melanoma. Research indicates that using tanning beds before the age of 30 can increase the risk of melanoma by up to 75%. Women on oral contraceptives should also avoid these devices, as female hormones increase the risk of developing melasma.

Avoid showering immediately

After using a tanning bed, avoid water for a few moments. Water can minimize the tanning effect and lead to quicker moisture loss in irritated skin. Wait 4 to 5 hours before and use cold water with a mildly acidic cleanser to rinse off gently.

Another popular option is tanning Sprays

Many people are considering “tanning sprays” as another option. Such tanning requires tanning products to stain the skin temporarily. The principle behind fake tanning is that the product’s ingredients bind to the proteins in the skin’s outer layer, resulting in a tan that lasts about 7 to 10 days until the skin’s natural exfoliation happens.

Can white tanning make your skin transparent?

While white tanning can lighten the skin to some extent, it won’t dramatically change innate skin tone to a bright white. It aims to even out skin tone and texture, providing a more youthful appearance. It can help even patchy skin or restore the original skin color.

Want to achieve a natural tan?

When utilizing a natural tan, avoid excessive sun exposure. For instance, if you sunbathe for 5 minutes, take a break for 10 minutes so that your total exposure doesn’t exceed 30 minutes. You should also change positions frequently while tanning and use reflected light from a beach umbrella rather than direct sunlight for safer tanning.

Precautions for tanning

You should avoid sun exposure during the peak hours of 11 AM to 3 PM. Tanning oil that contains vitamins relaxes irritated skin. After tanning, the skin may go dry and cause irritation. It’s essential to have a hydrating moisturizer and apply it generously to prevent further skin damage.

Prioritize skin health

Whether you choose artificial or natural tanning, prioritize your skin’s health. As both methods can cause allergies, it is crucial to consult with a professional. Lastly, maintain a skincare routine and post-tanning care to prevent skin irritation.
