While fresh blueberries are often celebrated for their health perks, frozen blueberries might offer even more excellent benefits. So, what happens to your body when you eat these berries?

1. Increase in antioxidant effects

Consuming frozen blueberries significantly increases the concentration of antioxidants, particularly anthocyanin. These potent antioxidants help neutralize free radicals in the body, protecting cells from damage and slowing aging. Freezing blueberries enhances the concentration of anthocyanin, amplifying their antioxidant effects.

2. Improved eye health

Frozen blueberries contain about 30 times more anthocyanin than grapes, making them particularly beneficial for eye health. Anthocyanin aids the re-synthesis of rhodopsin in the retina, helping to prevent vision deterioration and reduce eye fatigue. Additionally, frozen blueberries are high in vitamin A, which can help relieve dry eye syndrome.

3. Suppression of carcinogens

Frozen blueberries are rich in anthocyanin and other antioxidants, like flavonoids and resveratrol. These compounds help protect the body from carcinogens that can result from food and air pollution. They also inhibit the growth of cancer cells and boost immunity, playing a key role in disease prevention.

When washing blueberries, it’s essential to note that the cloudy coating on their skin is a natural white “bloom,” not mold. A heavier bloom indicates sweeter and more nutritious berries.

To wash them effectively while preserving their natural wax, soak the blueberries with a few drops of vinegar for 10 minutes, then rinse them gently under running water. This method helps prevent the berries from becoming mushy.
