Tokyo, Japan, has claimed the title of the world’s leading metropolis, according to Condé Nast Traveler’s 2024 Readers’ Choice Survey. As reported by The Asahi Shimbun, this achievement marks the sixth time Tokyo has been ranked at the top since the survey began in 1988.

Condé Nast Traveler attributes Tokyo’s top ranking to its unique street aesthetic, where futuristic neon skyscrapers blend seamlessly with serene temples. The magazine also emphasizes Tokyo’s culinary excellence, noting its unmatched concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants globally.

Officials from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s Bureau of Industrial and Labor Affairs attribute this success to strategically promoting Tokyo’s cuisine and cultural attractions. They also point out that the city’s outstanding safety has fostered a vibrant nighttime tourism scene, drawing a growing number of international visitors.

An official expressed excitement, noting that reaching the top position is a testament to their dedicated efforts in promoting tourism and enhancing Tokyo’s appeal to visitors.

The survey, which saw responses from nearly 570,000 participants, placed Singapore in second, followed by Sydney, Australia, in third, and Cape Town, South Africa, in fourth. Rounding out the top ten were Vienna, Austria (5th); Vancouver, Canada (6th); Madrid, Spain (7th); Copenhagen, Denmark (8th); Montreal, Canada (9th); and London, UK (10th).
