Struggling with Menopause? Ditch These 5 Foods to Feel Better

wikitree Views

Menopause brings a whirlwind of symptoms—hot flashes, joint pain, weight gain, and sleepless nights—many of which stem from hormonal changes. While a balanced diet of fish, whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, and veggies can help, certain foods might worsen your symptoms. Here’s what to avoid for smoother sailing through menopause.

1. Snacks

Those chips and cookies in your pantry? They might be making your symptoms worse. Sugary and salty snacks can exacerbate bloating and weight gain, both common during menopause. Instead of reaching for processed snacks, try healthier options like string cheese, raw veggies, or whole-grain crackers.

2. Coffee

As much as you love your morning brew, caffeine could be the reason behind those relentless hot flashes. A 2015 study found that women who consumed high levels of caffeine experienced more frequent and intense hot flashes. Plus, if you’re battling menopause-induced insomnia, caffeine can make restful sleep even harder to come by.

3. Fast Food

Fast food might be quick and convenient, but it’s loaded with unhealthy fats that can worsen weight gain and increase your risk of heart disease during menopause. Burgers, fries, and other fast-food staples are also calorie bombs that can lead to stubborn belly fat—a common struggle at this stage. Opt for home-cooked meals instead, even on busy days.

4. Red Meat and Processed Foods

Fatty red meats and processed foods do no favors for menopausal women. They’re high in saturated and trans fats, which can harm blood vessels, especially when estrogen levels are already declining. Worse, red meats can lead to visceral fat, which surrounds internal organs and raises the risk of chronic diseases. Stick to lean proteins like chicken, fish, or plant-based options.

5. Spicy Foods

Love a little heat in your meals? Spicy foods may trigger sweating and flushing, making hot flashes even more unbearable. Capsaicin, the compound responsible for the kick, can worsen symptoms for many menopausal women. Try swapping out spicy peppers for gentler seasonings like basil or turmeric to add flavor without the sweat.
