Everything You Need to Know About Sweet Potatoes (From Growing to Eating)

daily Views

Sweet potatoes quickly become a favorite comfort food as the weather cools down. Known for their rich, starchy sweetness and versatility in cooking, sweet potatoes have earned a place on tables in various forms — from baked and mashed to fried and even in casseroles. But sweet potatoes are more than just a delicious side dish; they have a long and fascinating history and an impressive nutritional profile. In this article, we’ll explore some fun and useful facts about sweet potatoes that might surprise you!

The Long History of Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes have been a staple food for humans for centuries. Fossil evidence shows their long history, with the oldest specimens found in the East Garo Hills of Meghalaya, India. This discovery suggests that sweet potatoes may have originated in South Asia. Traditionally, it was believed that sweet potatoes originated in the highlands of Mexico, where they were popular. According to previous theories, Christopher Columbus spread them to Europe and Asia.

How to Propagate Sweet Potatoes

While sweet potatoes can technically be grown from seeds, most people propagate them using slips—vine cuttings that sprout from the sweet potato. To start, bury a sweet potato in a warm, moist environment, such as a greenhouse or a sunny window, and wait for the vines to begin sprouting.

Once the slips grow to a few inches long, cut them off and plant them in the ground. They will continue to produce more vines, and within about four months, you can harvest your homegrown sweet potatoes. One of the great benefits of sweet potatoes is that they’re naturally pest-resistant, meaning you don’t need to rely on chemical pesticides.

Sweet Potatoes vs. Regular Potatoes: What’s the Difference?

While they share similar shapes and are often used in the same dishes, sweet potatoes, and regular potatoes are not closely related. Sweet potatoes are actually storage roots, while regular potatoes are tubers. The two plants belong to different families; sweet potatoes are part of the morning glory family, while regular potatoes are from the nightshade family. A key difference is that sweet potatoes are much more versatile in consumption. You can eat the root; the leaves and vines are also edible! On the other hand, regular potatoes should never be eaten raw, as they contain toxins in the stems and leaves, which are toxic to humans.

Sweet Potatoes for Ornamental Use

Sweet potatoes aren’t just for eating — they can also make for a beautiful ornamental plant. You can grow them indoors by submerging a sweet potato halfway in a water bottle, ensuring only half is in the water. Place the bottle in a sunny spot; soon enough, you’ll see vines sprout. Sweet potatoes are heat-loving plants, the best when grown in warm, sunny places. If you’re growing them hydroponically (in water), use nutrient-rich water like fish tank water, which provides the perfect conditions for the plant to thrive.

Storing Sweet Potatoes: Keep Them Cozy

Whatever you do, don’t store your sweet potatoes in the fridge! Sweet potatoes are susceptible to cold temperatures and spoil quickly if stored in a cool environment. The ideal storage spot is warm and dry, around 24°C (approximately 75°F). Unlike regular potatoes, which prefer cooler, darker storage, sweet potatoes thrive in a warm, sunny spot.

Nutritional Benefits of Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are not only tasty but also packed with nutrients. They are an excellent source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals, including vitamin A (from beta-carotene), essential for eye health and immune function. They are also a great source of potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure and promote heart health.

Sweet potatoes are naturally sweet, satisfying your cravings for sugary treats in a healthier way. While you can eat them raw, cooking—especially roasting or steaming—enhances their sweetness and nutritional content. Even if your sweet potato sprouts, it’s still safe to eat!

Sweet Potatoes: A Healthy Snack for Your Pets

Sweet potatoes aren’t just a hit with humans — dogs love them too! Baked or steamed (without the skin), sweet potatoes make a healthy, natural snack for your pets. They’re a great source of fiber and vitamins, making them an excellent treat, but be sure to feed them in moderation, as they are high in carbohydrates and natural sugars.

While dogs love sweet potatoes, cats are less likely to show interest in them. Since cats lack taste receptors for sweetness, they may not find them appealing. However, some cats might enjoy a small bite, though it’s not an everyday snack.

Sweet Potato Skin: A Nutrient Powerhouse

The skin of the sweet potato is often overlooked, but it’s packed with valuable nutrients that can enhance your health. It’s rich in fiber, which helps support digestion and can lower cholesterol levels. The skin also contains a good dose of potassium, which aids in balancing fluids and removing excess sodium from the body.
