Red yeast rice and vitamin B3 (niacin) may seem ideal for heart health since both help lower cholesterol. However, taking them together can cause serious issues.

Dr. Todd Sontag, a U.S. family medicine specialist, cautions that combining these supplements can strain your liver and cause drops in blood pressure.

Vitamin B3 dilates blood vessels and improves circulation, while red yeast rice prevents blood clots. When combined, they can overly stimulate circulation, increasing the risk of dangerously low blood pressure or blood clotting disorders.

Dr. Sontag explained that red yeast rice inhibits cholesterol synthesis in the liver and highlighted that excessive vitamin B3 intake can be toxic to the liver. He emphasized that when taken together, these substances significantly increase the risk of liver damage.

Magnesium and calcium are essential minerals, but taking them simultaneously can reduce their absorption rates.

Dr. Sontag noted that calcium can lower magnesium levels in the blood, which might lead to muscle cramps and fatigue. He also mentioned that magnesium can interfere with calcium’s role in strengthening bones. To minimize interference, he advised that if both supplements are needed, they should be taken at least two hours apart.

Avoid taking multiple fat-soluble vitamins together. The body stores these vitamins, and excessive intake can lead to toxic effects.

Overloading fat-soluble vitamins may result in liver damage, decreased bone density, and calcium imbalances.

Always follow the recommended dosages for each supplement. If taking multiple vitamins or minerals, consult a healthcare professional to ensure safe and effective supplementation.
