Blood Donation 101: Conditions, Requirements, and Key Tips

daily Views

Blood donation can save many lives. People who need transfusions rely on donors to supply the necessary blood. However, you can’t simply donate whenever you want; various conditions must be met to ensure the safety of both donors and recipients. If you plan to donate blood, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with these requirements in advance to avoid any wasted trips.

What are the conditions for blood donation?

Before making a blood donation reservation, you need to check several conditions. First, you must be a healthy adult aged 17 to 70. Women must weigh at least 45 kg, and men at least 50 kg. Additionally, systolic blood pressure should range from 90 to less than 179, diastolic blood pressure should be under 100, body temperature should not exceed 37.5°C, and pulse rate should be between 50 and 100 beats per minute. These basic conditions are just that—basic. Since individual cases may vary depending on medications or treatments, it is essential to consult thoroughly with the blood donation staff before proceeding.

Various types of blood donation

Blood donation comes in several forms. Whole blood donation is the most common method of collecting all blood components. Plasma donation differs from whole blood donation in that it extracts only a portion of the plasma during donation, returning the remaining blood components to the donor’s body. This process uses a specialized blood component separator to collect plasma, which is especially beneficial for burn victims and patients with weakened immune systems.

Can you donate blood after drinking?

You cannot donate blood immediately after drinking alcohol. Alcohol can affect your body and compromise the safety of the donation. If you have consumed alcohol, you must wait at least 24 hours before donating blood, and if you have drunk excessively, it’s better to wait even longer.

Checking your medications is essential

Some medications, including antibiotics and pain relievers, can affect your ability to donate blood. Certain medications, such as anticoagulants, can interfere with blood clotting during donation. Therefore, it’s essential to consult with donation staff for detailed guidance. Before you decide to donate, thoroughly review your health status and any medications you are taking.

What if you have a tattoo?

If you have a tattoo, you must wait about a year before donating blood. Tattoos involve the use of needles to inject ink, which may carry a risk of viral infections. Smokers can donate blood without issues, but they should avoid smoking for at least an hour after donating to prevent nausea or dizziness.

What are the conditions to receive a blood donation commendation?

The Korean Red Cross Blood Management Headquarters awards the blood donation commendation to recognize individuals who actively participate in blood donation. Previously, they awarded medals similar to honors but recently transitioned to commendation plaques. The types of commendations vary based on the number of donations: a silver plaque for 30 donations, a gold plaque for 50 donations, an honorary plaque for 100 donations, an honorary grand plaque for 200 donations, and a supreme honorary grand plaque for 300 donations. After verifying your identity on the website, you can choose a location to receive your commendation.

Travel abroad and blood donation restrictions

If you recently traveled abroad, you may face restrictions on blood donation. This is especially true if you visited areas at risk for tropical diseases, as you could have been exposed to infectious diseases. Therefore, you must wait at least four weeks after returning from your trip before donating blood. If you traveled to areas with a history of malaria outbreaks, Zika virus, or Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, your donation may be restricted for a certain period.

Precautions before and after blood donation

After donating blood, it’s crucial to take some time to rest and follow safety precautions. Avoid excessive exercise and drinking alcohol, and make sure to stay hydrated. You should rest in a stable position for at least 10 minutes after donating to monitor your body’s response. Immediately after donating, avoid consuming caffeine or alcohol, and stabilize your blood sugar with a light snack.

Maintain a safe interval

Men should wait 12 weeks to donate blood regularly, while women should wait 16 weeks between donations. This recommendation reflects the blood recovery cycle. After donating, it’s essential to allow sufficient recovery time for your body to replenish its blood volume. Regular health check-ups and proper nutrition are also necessary to maintain physical health.
