Glaucoma is a condition that gradually damages the optic nerve, causing a narrowing of the visual field. Research shows that individuals with a family history of glaucoma face up to ten times higher risk of developing the disease compared to the general population.

Even if there are no symptoms, routine eye exams are crucial if you have a parent, sibling, or child who has glaucoma. Although glaucoma is not always an inherited condition, genetic predisposition can significantly raise the risk of developing it. It is known as the “silent thief of vision” because, in its early stages, there are hardly any symptoms; however, if treatment is not received, blindness may result. Early detection is essential to prevent damage to the optic nerve because once it is damaged, recovery is challenging. Additionally, regular eye pressure checks and visual field tests are advised because Asians are more likely to have normal-tension glaucoma.

Even though his father had lost his vision due to glaucoma, a patient in his 40s who came to Gangnam IOK Eye Clinic put off a checkup because he was symptom-free. He did, however, have early-stage open-angle glaucoma discovered during a routine examination, and prompt treatment reduced optic nerve damage.

Therefore, prevention and early diagnosis are crucial, as glaucoma can be effectively managed with medication, laser treatment, and surgery if detected early. Regular eye health examinations are recommended for high-risk groups, particularly those over 40 and individuals with conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and myopia. A comprehensive exam that includes an intraocular pressure reading, a visual field test, and optical nerve computed tomography (OCT) should be conducted at least once a year for those with a family history of glaucoma. In May, Family Month, Gangnam IOK Eye Clinic strongly encourages families to undergo thorough eye exams. If there is a family history, you can go together, and a specialist’s personalized consultation and detailed examination can help identify glaucoma and other eye conditions early. According to Dr. Oh Young Sam, director of Gangnam IOK Eye Clinic and visiting professor at Seoul Asan Medical Center, glaucoma is a frightening condition that progresses silently, the more you neglect it. If it runs in your family, you should be particularly vigilant. “Even if you have no symptoms, you should get a regular comprehensive eye exam every year if you are over 40 to prevent eye diseases,” he added.
