Controversy is brewing over a late revelation that a homeroom teacher at a high school in Daejeon had slapped a senior student.

According to a KBS report on the 10th, a student identified as A, who is currently in the third year of high school in Daejeon, was slapped twice by his homeroom teacher in the school corridor in mid-August. The reason was that he had overslept in the dormitory and was about 8 minutes late. As a result of the teacher’s assault, A was diagnosed with a two-week injury. The teacher in question stated, “It happened while I was disciplining A.”

In the photos of the incident released by the media, A’s face is swollen on one side, and there are red wounds on both sides of his neck.

A’s mother exploded in anger, saying, “My child was crying as if he was having a nightmare. This went on for a few days. He was so scared and terrified of the teacher that he acted as if he was paralyzed with fear.” Currently, A is receiving psychological counseling.

Following the incident, the school reported the teacher to the Education Office on charges of assault. The Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education determined it as school violence and directed protective measures for the student, but no separate segregation measures were taken. It is reported that the teacher in question is still in charge of A’s homeroom.

Under the current law, it is difficult to impose separate sanctions until the investigation is completed if the perpetrator is a teacher, not a student, which is believed to have led to this situation.

The police, based on CCTV footage and other evidence, believe that the teacher’s behavior constitutes child abuse and plan to refer the teacher to the prosecution soon. The school announced that it will impose disciplinary measures as soon as the police investigation results are out.
