Serial Killer Claims Unusual Motive for Murdering Only Women

Daniel Kim Views

On the 12th, ‘Curious Story Y’ will delve into the case of Lee Young-bok, a serial killer who committed murders at six-day intervals.

On the snowy day of December 30th, the warm end of the year for the family of Mr. Shin (pseudonym) turned into a tragedy in an instant. The 60-year-old tea room owner, Shin, who had been raising her son alone and living diligently and earnestly, was brutally murdered by a stranger. The family, who confirmed her brutal death through CCTV footage, could not hide their anger.

A man who was sitting alone at a table drinking beer. Around 7 PM, the man, who overheard Mr. Shin’s phone call saying she would close the shop soon, brutally assaulted and strangled her to death. The identity of the criminal was Lee Young-bok, 57 years old, with five previous convictions, who was released from prison in November last year. After the crime, he changed his clothes in the tea room to hide his identity, locked the store door, and fled, showing meticulousness. The police’s pursuit of Lee was difficult due to the hard-to-see CCTV footage and the fact that he only used cash.

Lee committed his second murder only six days after his first. He killed Mr. Yang (pseudonym), who was running a tea room in Yangju, Gyeonggi-do. His method was identical to the first murder. Lee, who visited the tea room alone, committed the crime when the employee left and only Yang was left after drinking. The deceased victim’s face had clear signs of bruising and strangulation, her pants zipper was down, and her socks were taken off. After the crime, Lee calmly left the store, even leisurely asking passers-by for directions, and smoothly left the scene. After a persistent pursuit by the police, Lee was finally arrested in Gangneung on the 5th.

According to the detective in charge of the case, Lee Young-bok stated in a police investigation, “I hate looking weak and wanted to show a strong image, so I committed the crime.”

Lee, who just didn’t want to appear weak, killed the unfamiliar female tea room owners. How much can we believe his words? The production team was able to meet and hear from a person who had been imprisoned with Lee, but what kind of person was Lee Young-bok as told by his prison mate? This week’s SBS ‘Curious Story Y’ will be broadcast at 9 PM on Friday, the 12th.
