Philip Goldberg, the U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, attended the 2024 MLB Seoul Series opener at Seoul Gocheok Sky Dome.

According to Yonhap News on the 20th, Ambassador Goldberg praised the MLB Seoul Series as “absolutely fantastic,” stating, “It’s very special for two American West teams with Korean and Japanese players to play their regular league opener in Seoul.”

He emphasized, “South Korea, Japan, and the U.S. all share a love for baseball, and it’s important that we can further expand our strong relationship through baseball.” His comments suggest that the MLB Seoul Series can be a significant opportunity to promote friendship and communication beyond a simple sports event among Korea, the US, and Japan.

Ambassador Goldberg also revealed his deep ties with his hometown team, the Boston Red Sox. He mentioned Dave Roberts and Mookie Betts, who have a connection with Boston, and expressed admiration for Roberts, who “led Boston to shake off the ‘Curse of the Bambino’ and won the World Series for the first time in 86 years.” Roberts’ crucial steal in the 2004 American League Championship Series is famously known as “The Steal” and is remembered as a historic moment.

Ambassador Goldberg’s interview presented an interesting opportunity to share his personal love for baseball while reaffirming the importance of international friendship and communication through baseball.
